Introducing our Y on Wheels!
The Y On Wheels is a mobile YMCA. The program provides fitness and nutrition based programs designed to teach principles and methods of healthy physical fitness to children. The Y On Wheels project collaborates with local service agencies, churches and parks and recreation departments to bring the YMCA programing, mission, and values to communities and neighborhoods that do not have access to a YMCA facility or programing. The project reaches out to communities through free outreach programs that are designed to provide the Y experience for children and families that do not have access to or who cannot afford Y programs.
The Y On Wheels program goal is to make physical activity enjoyable. All of the equipment, programming and activities are designed to
be appealing to youth and teens. The program offers an active environment with the movement of the human body driving the fun. Research has shown that influencing children’s’ attitudes towards and perceptions of physical activity may affect their involvement in physical activity. Activities should encourage children to view physical activity as important and enjoyable. Increasing children’s confidence in their ability to engage in physical activity increases the likelihood of enjoyment and therefore, the likelihood of regular participation in physical activity. Youth are more likely to have positive attitudes towards physical activity if their needs and interests are met through a variety of activities.
Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 - 11am to 5pm
Location: Downtown Y in the gym
Come sign up in our Downtown lobby to donate blood. We’re striving to get over 50 donors to be able to give, invite your friends and neighbors to give back! It is an unfortunate reality that blood donations decline in the summer due to vacations, holidays and the absence of high school and college blood drives. Now is the time to help provide a second chance for an accident victim, a new beginning for a cancer patient, or a better tomorrow for a child with Sickle Cell Disease.

On June 11th, 28 teams will take part in the Youth Scholarship Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament at Boonsboro Country Club. This event enables the YMCA of Central Virginia to continue making a difference. In 2012, the YMCA awarded $739,831 in scholarships, which directly benefited members of our community.
WASHINGTON, D.C., (FEB. 27, 2013) – Today, YMCA of the USA, the national resource office for the nation’s 2,700 YMCAs, joined leading afterschool and youth development advocacy organizations in support of the “Afterschool for America’s Children Act.” Introduced by U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.), this bipartisan legislation would strengthen the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) initiative—the nation’s only federal funding stream for afterschool programs.
