Outreach Swim
31 January 2012
It’s a startling but true fact that drowning is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 14 and younger, and that an average of 9 people drown each day in the US alone. The YMCA of Central VA takes these statistics very seriously; and that is why we started the Lynchburg Swim Initiative to provide free swimming lessons to “at risk” children in your community.
The Downtown Y taught 111 children to swim during the 2010-2011 school year. We had 4 volunteers that gave a total of over 175 hours of service. Our goal is to reach as many children as possible, and by working together we plan to reduce the statistics on drowning deaths in our community. Swimming is a valuable, lifelong skill which we believe every child deserves to have an opportunity to learn.
We would like to invite your child to participate in our Lynchburg Swim Initiative swimming lessons.
